Sketches (in class) -- Sept 21st

Attempts to express the idea of movement in a drawing by using only points and lines.
Comment : These drawings are rather explorations on the assigned theme than final compositions.

The idea of interruption
Comment : Here I tried to do a more accomplished composition. Maybe I should have explored the theme with sketches first. My points look more like planes (squares).

Assignment -- Sept 21st

Drawings of the same view point through our appartment, with a closer view each time (photos taken with a digital camera).

First view :

Second view :

Third view :

Comments : Although I, kind of, forget to pay attention to the quality of the lines, I like the impression of depth, which is produced by drawing darker lines in the foreground. Finally, even tough I have had difficulties drawing clear lines - definitely something I have realised with this exercise - I find the drawings rather realistic, they remind me of 2D animation.

Readings -- Wucius Wong, "Principles of Two-Dimensional Design" -- Sept 14th

Quotations from chapters one and two of Wucius Wong, Principles of Two-Dimensional Design, published by Van Nostrand Reinhold Company.
« A good design, in short, is the best possible visual expression of the essence of ' something, ' whether this be a message or a product [...] the designer should look for the best possible way this 'something' can be shaped, made, distributed, used, and related to the environment. »

« Design is practical. The designer is a practical man. »

The author considers four groups of elements of design, which together
« determine the ultimate appearance and contents of a design .»

Conceptual elements
Visual elements
Relational elements
Practical elements

In addition, the framal reference delimits a design and the picture plane is the support of a design.
« All the visual elements constitute whate we generally call ' form ', [...] The way form is created, constructed or organized along with other forms is often governed by a certain discipline which we call ' structure '. »

About form and structures in chapter 2 :
« The various kind of interrelationships should always be explored when forms are organized in a design. »

« Each kind of interrelationship produces differnet spatial effects »

Different forms interrelationships :
Overlapping
Penetration
Union
Substraction
Intersection
Coinciding

Personnal -- Link about interfaces

Last class we were discussing about interfaces. We took as an example the one in the movie Minority report.

I have come accross this video which showcase a similar kind of interface experimented at Sony Japan.
